Empowering Your Leadership Journey
Embarking on my coaching journey has been like setting sail into the Bermuda Triangle of self-discovery—thrilling, mysterious, and occasionally downright terrifying. It has been a roller coaster of emotions and transformation and has set me on a path there is no return from because once you know, you know.
As I navigate through personal coaching sessions, supervision and client interactions, there are moments when I find myself clinging to a metaphorical life raft not to panic and run out of the room screaming. What keeps me going, apart from the skill and diligence of my trainers and the support of my collegues on this journey, is the knowledge that self discovery and acceptance are the only true path to authenticity and fullfilment. What I am truly digging for is a clear understanding of what I value and the development of a skill set that will help me live my best and happiest life.
What I've learnt is that understanding our core values is like having a cheat code to the game of life. It's the secret sauce that transforms our everyday decisions from blind guesses into well-informed choices, guiding us towards a future that's as fulfilling as it is authentic.
In the realm of organizational development and leadership, theorists like Stephen R. Covey, author of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People," have played significant roles in popularizing the idea of core values and their importance in personal and professional life.
Covey's work and the works of others in similar fields have helped shape our understanding of core values and their impact on behavior, decision-making, and organizational culture.
On a personal level our core values are the fundamental beliefs and principles that act as a foundation for our lives. They represent what truly matters to us, what brings us a sense of fulfillment, and what motivates our actions. Think of them as the invisible compass we carry within – they guide our decisions, shape our behaviors, and influence how we navigate life's experiences.
Why is uncovering your Core Values Important?
Imagine being pulled in different directions by external pressures and expectations. This is what happens when you lack clarity on your core values. When you're not grounded in your own principles, it's easy to feel lost, unfulfilled, and like you're constantly compromising your true self.
However, by understanding your core values, you gain a powerful tool for self-direction. Of course we are all different and there is much to discover on this topic but here a few benefits that come out of such self awareness.
Increased Clarity and Direction: Knowing your core values helps you prioritize what matters most in your life. This allows you to make decisions that are aligned with your true self, leading to a greater sense of purpose and fulfillment.
Improved Decision-Making: When faced with choices, your core values act as a compass for your true direction. They help you filter out options that don't resonate with you, making the decision-making process smoother and less stressful.
Enhanced Relationships: When you live according to your values, you exude authenticity and integrity. This fosters stronger, more trusting relationships with others who respect your core principles.
Greater Resilience: Life throws challenges our way, but core values provide an inner strength. When faced with difficulties, knowing what truly matters to you allows you to bounce back with greater resilience.
A More Fulfilling Life: When you live a life aligned with your core values, you experience a deeper sense of satisfaction and meaning. It's about living authentically and true to yourself, which ultimately leads to a more fulfilling life.
